Question of the Day

QHi Dr P, I have various family members who suffer from Diabetes and I´m getting a little worried.

What are some of the symptoms of Diabetes?

Carmen in New York.

A Dear Carmen, your question is very important because Diabetes and Pre-Diabetes have become epidemics in our communities. Diabetes can affect every organ in the body and it is vital to recognize some of the most common symptoms. These include:

  • Excess Thirst
  • Frequent urination
  • Feeling hungry all the time
  • Weight loss (which can occur when one´s blood sugar is out of control)
  • Fatigue

Other symptoms include numbness and tingling of the hands and feet, recurrent infections of the skin, gums and genital area. Nausea, vomiting and blurred vision can also occur. It´s also important to be aware that many individuals don´t have any symptoms in the early stages of diabetes and pre-diabetes. For these reasons I recommend getting screened for diabetes especially if you have family members with the disease or if you are overweight. Finding out with only a single drop of blood for the test could save your life.

As always, remember life is precious. Cherish it and Live It!.
